Buffalo, winners of six straight games are undefeated in conference play (5-0) for the first time this late in the season. UB was 5-0 in 1997-98, which was its final year in the Mid-Continent Conference, but a Buffalo team has never been 6-0 in conference play. This is a meeting of the two teams picked to win their respective divisions in the MAC preseason poll.

Western Michigan leads the all-time series 13-11 and has had the upper hand in games played in Kalamazoo. The Broncos have won the last three meetings at University Arena and Buffalo has not won at WMU since the 2010-11 season when the Bulls won twice there, including in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. University Arena is the only arena in the MAC that Nate Oats does not have a victory in.

The Bulls have scored at least 80 points in every game during their current six-game winning streak, the first time that UB has scored 80 in six straight games since the 1970-71 season. Should the Bulls score 80 again on Friday evening, it will be the first time in school history, dating back to 1915-16, that Buffalo has done it in seven straight games.

The Broncos are led by Thomas Wilder, who many picked as the conference’s preseason player of the year. Wilder is averaging 17.6 points per game and leads WMU with 80 assists. Josh Davis is averaging 10.7 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game. Bryce Moore chips in 10.1 points as five Western Michigan players average at least 9.0 points per game.

Lakers vs Knicks

Lakers vs Knicks: The Los Angeles Lakers take on the New York Knicks on Friday at Staples Center and second-year small forward Kyle Kuzma is questionable to play. Kyle Kuzma suffered a back injury Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder and was forced to leave the game. An MRI confirmed that Kuzma has a contusion in his back.

In 38 games this year for Los Angeles, Kyle Kuzma is averaging 18.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. The 23-year-old is shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 30.2 percent from beyond the arc and 78.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Kuzma is second on the Lakers in points per game, trailing only LeBron James, who is also out due to the groin injury he suffered on Christmas Day against the Golden State Warriors.

LA is just 1-3 since LeBron went down with a groin strain. Losing Kyle Kuzma for any period of time would be devastating to the team. If Kuzma can’t play versus New York, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart have to step up their games collectively to lead the team.

The Knicks are just 9-29 on the year. Even without LeBron, Kuzma and Rajon Rondo, the Lakers should still beat New York at home on Friday. As expected, LeBron James remains out with a strained left groin for the Lakers home matchup on Friday night against the New York Knicks.

While there was plenty of excitement surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers once they signed LeBron James, the front office and head coach Luke Walton tempered heightened expectations by highlighting the remade roster would need time to develop chemistry.

The Lakers have been snakebitten in that process, with suspensions and injuries intervening since the second game of the season. Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo were suspended four and three games, respectively, for their role in a fight with Chris Paul and the Houston Rockets.

Cavaliers vs Jazz

Cavaliers vs Jazz: The Cleveland Cavaliers will look to bounce back as they host the Utah Jazz on NBA Basketball at Quicken Loans Arena Cleveland, Ohio. The Utah Jazz handle being nearly a double-digit favorite on the road when they take on the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at 7:30PM ET.

The Jazz have lost in their annual trip to Cleveland for six consecutive seasons. Something they surely will try to avoid as they try to get back in the playoffs in the competitive Western Conference. The Cleveland Cavaliers play host to the Utah Jazz at the Quicken Loans Arena on Friday night at NBA Basketball.

Despite their struggles, the Jazz are probably considerably better than their record. Not only as a result of the talent that they have, but their point differential is tied for fifth best in the conference with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The problem for the Jazz has been their inconsistency on offense, headlined by the sophomore slump of Donovan Mitchell. But considering the Cavs are currently trotting out the worst defense in NBA history, this matchup could be exactly what Utah needs to get back on track.

For the Cavs, the hope is that they will play more like the first quarter against the Heat rather than what followed. They put together one of the worst rebounding performances you’ll ever see from an NBA team and struggled to attack the Heat’s zone defense.

One of the biggest issues for the Cavs offensively is how long it takes them to get into their offensive sets. Against a sixth ranked Jazz defense, they can’t wait until there is ten seconds or less to get into whatever they are trying to run. Increasing the pace and playing with more of a purpose will be essential to keeping this game competitive.

Aleksi Heponiemi, a center in the Florida Panthers’ organization, was the hero, scoring on a bizarre ricochet from behind the net with 46.4 seconds left to get the game tied at 1. The Finnish team was buoyed by their special young net minder, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, whose 25 saves, including saving a Maxim Comtois penalty shot in overtime, kept Finland in the game long enough for Toni Utunen to score the game winner.

Luukkonen may meet his match in Switzerland’s Luca Hollenstein, whose 32 saves were obviously integral in shutting out and defeating Sweden. It was Luca’s all around, as Luca Wyss scored the second insurance goal that salted the game away for Switzerland and carried them into the semifinal. Friday and Saturday are the final days of the tournament, so be sure to tune in while you can.

There’s no question that Finland should have the better team and be the favorite here. But something has seemed special about the Swiss team from the very beginning. They were a tough matchup throughout the preliminary round, and scored a mega-upset against the Swedish squad. Could their momentum carry them through to the gold medal game?

Switzerland’s coach Christian Wohlwend certainly thinks so, even though his country has never made a WJC final. When asked by TSN if he thought his team could win gold, he responded: Switzerland will certainly be an underdog again when they take on the Finns, but that hasn’t stopped them before. Expect an exciting matchup in Friday’s final game.

Russia had a few games that left a few question marks about their squad in the preliminary round. It was the game against Switzerland that seemed to push them to their top gear, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win that game 7-4. They went on to defeat Canada in the final game of the preliminary schedule, and then won the least competitive of the four quarter-finals, knocking Slovakia out of the tournament with an 8-3 decision.

Today they play another team that has been working its way through the field in recent days, getting a matchup with the United States that would make for a worthy final. There will be no medals handed out after the game, but there is the threat of missing out on a chance for gold. This game should be among the best the World Juniors have seen this year.

Ryan Poehling is the tournament’s top scorer, with five goals and eight points. He is relied upon in all situations for his team. Alexander Romanov is in a similar position for the Russian side, doing it all on the blue line. He’s just one point back of Poehling for a share of the tournament scoring lead and leads all players with a +10 rating while playing significant minutes.

If you’re a Montreal Canadiens fan, it’s a chance to see two players who seem destined for roles with the NHL team in the near future. Even without that added element, it’s still bound to be a highly entertaining contest.

Tottenham vs Tranmere

Tottenham vs Tranmere: Tottenham Hotspur face Tranmere in the third round of the FA Cup tonight, as they look to retain their spots in all four competitions they started the season in. Spurs currently sit third in the Premier League behind Liverpool and Man City, with the North London side just six points off the top.

Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Prenton Park to take on Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup. Mauricio Pochettino should be desperate to do well in the competition after failing to win a major trophy at Spurs so far. It is expected that the Argentine manager will make a lot of changes to his side for this clash against their League Two opponents.

Pochettino’s men have also booked ties against Chelsea in the semi finals of the Carabao Cup later this month. Finally, home and away legs against German league leaders Borussia Dortmund are set for February/March in the Champions League round of 16.

Tottenham fans will be desperate for a trophy this season, as the club have gone without for over a decade now. Pochettino has also never won a piece of silverware as a coach, and although he will want his first to be the Prem or Champions League, he wouldn’t pass up the chance to lift a cup.

We are predicting a simple 3-0 win for Tottenham tonight. Goals from Llorente, Lucas, and Son. The FA Cup is back, and Tottenham are still in it. Spurs are literally just across the River Mersey from Liverpool today, at the home of their League 2 opponents Tranmere Rovers for the FA Cup Third Round.

I’d like to tell you something about Tranmere Rovers. I cannot. I know they are mid-table in League 2, and they’re coming off of consecutive league draws against Macclesfield and Yeovil. I can tell you that they promoted last season after winning the Vanarama National League Play-Offs last spring.

I also can tell you they have a player by the name of Steve McNulty, a 35 year old center back who is their club captain, and looks like your dad. He weighs in at just under 200 lbs. and is an absolute unit. He might break Son Heung-Min. This is the first meeting between Tranmere and Tottenham in any competition since the 2001-02 season.

The Hawkeyes had their three-game winning streak snapped by Penn State in their last game, dropping them to number 19 in the top 25. They will try to bounce back from the loss and win their fourth game in their last five contests when they play the dangerous Boilermakers on Saturday.

Iowa’s defense is one of the best in the country this season, holding opponents to 16.1 points per game, which is 11th in the nation. The defense struggled against the Nittany Lions, giving up 30 points in the loss. They will face another tough offense this week against the Boilermakers, who average 33.1 points per game.

The defense will be without reserve defensive backs Trey Creamer and Matt Hankins, who were suspended for a week because they were cited for disorderly conduct. To beat the Hawkeyes, the Boilermakers have to play well on the offensive end like they did against the Buckeyes.

Offensively, the Hawkeyes have done well this season, averaging 29.8 points per game. Quarterback Nate Stanley has completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,764 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He suffered a thumb injury in the fourth quarter of their loss to Penn State, but he isn’t expected to miss any time.

The Boilermakers followed up their blowout win over then second-ranked Ohio State with a road loss to the Michigan State Spartans, snapping their four-game winning streak. They will try to get back on track with another upset win when they face the Hawkeyes.

Montana vs Sacramento State

Montana vs Sacramento State: Montana State University basketball will match up against the Sacramento State Hornets in this Big Sky Conference game! It will be a battle between BigSky opponents when the Sacramento State Hornets welcome the Montana Grizzlies  to The Hornets Nest. In the Grizzlies’ last outing, they beat the Northern Colorado Bears, 89-80. The Grizzlies had a phenomenal offensive rebounding percentage of 45.2 (above their season average of 35.0) and had a free throw rate of 0.491 (above their season average of 0.257). With 34 points on 11-for-16 shooting, Jamar Akoh was the game’s leading scorer.

The Hornets were beaten by the Eastern Washington Eagles in their last matchup, 82-67. Eastern Washington’s effective field goal percentage was their largest advantage over Sacramento State. The Eagles had a rate of 0.638 (above their season average of 0.511), while the Hornets posted a mark of 0.466. Sacramento State’s Justin Strings had 14 points and eight rebounds in the contest.

This has potential to be a sloppy game for the offense of Sacramento State. Sacramento State ranks 260th in the NCAA in ball protection (turnover percentage of 20.3 percent), while the pesky defense of Montana forces the 20th-most turnovers in the NCAA (24.0 percent). Moreover, the Grizzlies, who rank 27th in offensive rebounding percentage (35.5 percent), will square off against the Hornets, who rank 255th in defensive rebounding percentage (69.3 percent).

Montana heads into the game with records of 11-5 straight up (SU) and 10-4 against the spread (ATS). Grizzlies games have typically finished over the O/U total (64.3 percent).

Meanwhile, Sacramento State owns records of 4-12 SU and 7-6-1 ATS. Unlike Montana, Hornets games tend to finish under the projected point total (57.1 percent).

Both teams have had a player take their game to the next level over their last five games. Akoh (19.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals) has been stellar for the Grizzlies while Strings (20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists) has made great contributions to the Hornets.

After the Hornets won both meetings against the Grizzlies last season, this will be the first matchup of the year between these two teams. In the last contest, Sacramento State won 67-65. Getting to the free throw line was one of Sacramento State’s biggest advantages. They had 28 free throw attempts, while Montana had 17.

Minnesota vs Wisconsin

Minnesota vs Wisconsin: Wisconsin and Minnesota are resuming Big Ten play on Thursday night after each team concluded their 11-game non-conference schedule as each team are poised to be Tournament contenders. Wisconsin is barely ranked at 22 in the AP poll while Minnesota has been unranked the entire season. The Badgers are only 2-2 in their last four games with no quality wins.

Wisconsin and Minnesota both seem to be bouncing back just fine after last season. The Badgers were having a great non-conference season. They went 2-1 in the Bahamas with wins over Stanford and Oklahoma while losing to Virginia. Wisconsin beat North Carolina State, Iowa on the road while losing to just Marquette. Wisconsin then tripped up on the road to Western Kentucky last weekend.

The Golden Gophers beat a lot of power-conference teams, but they seem to be struggling this season. Minnesota defeated Utah and then went 3-0 in Vancouver with wins over Texas A&M, Santa Clara and Washington. The Utes and Aggies aren’t having the best seasons though. Minnesota went on the road and lost to a struggling Boston College team. They beat Oklahoma State, lost to Ohio State and then picked up a huge win over Nebraska to start a five-game wnning streak.

The Golden Gophers have their own big-two. I’ve said it before, Jordan Murphy is the most underrated player in the country. He’s averaging over 15 points per game and 12 boards with close to three assists. Murphy is going to give up some height to Happ, but they’re almost the same player. Their block numbers are the same and neither are much of a three-point threat.

Amir Coffey is the other guy averaging over 15 points per game for Minnesota. He has over three assists per game, 13 total steals, but not much of a three-point threat. Freshman Gabe Kalscheur is the outside shooter and has made 28 on he season. He’s the third of five Gophers in double-figures. Fellow freshman Daniel Oturu is averaging over 10 points per game while averaging 8.1 boards and blocking 27 shots. Dupree McBrayer is the other one averaging around 10 points per game while hitting 17 three-pointers.

There’s a bit of a drop off for Minnesota after those five. Brad Davison went off against the Hilltoppers which resulted in increasing his scoring average to just over 10 points per game. He had to play both guard positions last season, but now is clearly the two-guard. The backcourt depth includes Kobe King and Brevin Pritzl each averaging over five points per game. More guys for Happ to throw the ball to out of the post coming off the bench.

Minnesota does have Eric Curry returning. He was back for the game against Mount Saint Mary’s, played 17 minutes, made both of his shots, missed two outside shots, but grabbed six boards. That’s exactly how it went for the Badgers with Aleem Ford. He missed a few games to start the season, they eased him back in and is now a reliable three-point threat off the bench.
